Gentoo Code

The Gentoo Code, formally titled A Code of Gentoo Laws, or Ordinations of the Pundits, is an English translation, by the British East India Company grammarian Nathaniel Brassey Halhed, of a Persian rendering of a Sanskrit digest of Hindu law, the Vivadarnavasetu, compiled in twenty one sections for Governor-General Warren Hastings by Hindu pandits as a means of consolidating Company control over the Indian subcontinent. Concerned chiefly with the Hindu law of inheritance, it was first privately printed by the East India Company in London in 1776, followed by further English editions and French and German translations by 1778.
