Civil Code of the RSFSR (1922)
Also Known As RSFSR Civil Code, Soviet Civil Code of 1922
Civil Codes
The Civil Code of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, enacted in 1922 during the New Economic Policy period, was Soviet Russia's first civil code, built substantially on a pre-revolutionary draft Civil Code of Russia completed by professional lawyers by 1914, more than four hundred of whose provisions were carried into the new text. It combined a core of conventional private-law provisions, including intellectual property and foreign-person provisions, with the ideological vocabulary of national property, class interest and Soviet power appropriate to the NEP-era partial restoration of private economic activity. It remained in force for nearly forty years, until superseded by the 1964 RSFSR Civil Code, which in turn fed into the 1994 Russian Federation Civil Code.
