The Civil Code of the Republic of Chile, also known as the Code of Bello, is the work of the jurist and legislator Andres Bello. After several years of work that was officially presented as the product of multiple congressional commissions but was substantially Bello's own, he delivered a complete draft of the code on 22 November 1855, which President Manuel Montt sent to Congress preceded by a foreword written by Bello himself. Congress passed the Civil Code into law on 14 December 1855, and it came into force on 1 January 1857. Although it has been amended numerous times since, the code has remained continuously in force in Chile from that date to the present.
