Deuteronomic Code

The Deuteronomic Code is the body of law found in chapters 12 through 26 of the Book of Deuteronomy in the Hebrew Bible, one of the Torah's major legal collections alongside the Covenant Code of Exodus 20 through 23. It covers religious ceremony and ritual purity, civil and criminal law, and the conduct of war, framed within the covenant relationship between the Israelites and Yahweh and presented as part of Moses's final speeches to the people. Critical biblical scholarship attributes its composition to the Deuteronomist, a distinct authorial tradition, and the code is estimated to account for roughly a third of the mitzvot of Jewish law, with some provisions paralleling other Torah legal collections and others unique to Deuteronomy.
