The Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, or TTAB, is an administrative tribunal within the United States Patent and Trademark Office established in 1958. It determines rights to register a trademark but has no authority over actual trademark use, infringement, unfair competition, damages, or injunctive relief. The board hears two kinds of proceedings, ex parte appeals from decisions by USPTO examiners refusing to register a mark, and inter partes proceedings challenging marks that are already registered, and its decisions may themselves be appealed to a United States district court or to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
