Intermediate people's court

An intermediate people's court is the second-lowest tier of local people's court in the judicial system of China. As a court of first instance, it hears important local cases as well as cases involving national security, terrorism, or potential sentences of life imprisonment or death, and it also holds original jurisdiction over civil cases of major impact or with foreign involvement, over administrative cases challenging government action at the township level and above, and over cases specifically assigned to it by the Supreme People's Court. It additionally hears appeals from the basic people's courts below it.
