Special Court of Albania, 1945

Trial and First-Instance Courts

The Special Court of Albania, formally the Special Court for War Criminals and Enemies of the People, was a tribunal established in newly formed Socialist Albania to prosecute alleged collaborators with the wartime Italian and German occupiers and opponents of the new communist regime. It sat for 31 sessions between 1 March and 13 April 1945 at the former Savoja cinema in Tirana, trying 60 defendants that included former politicians, military officers and other public figures. The court convicted most of the defendants, sentencing 17 to execution by firing squad and 8 to life imprisonment, with the remainder receiving lesser prison terms and two being released for insufficient evidence; the Interior Minister Koci Xoxe presided as the leading judge, with General Bedri Spahiu as prosecutor.
