Virginia Circuit Court

The Virginia Circuit Courts are the state trial courts of general jurisdiction in the Commonwealth of Virginia, with authority over both civil and criminal cases. In civil matters the courts may try cases with an amount in controversy over $4,500 and hold exclusive original jurisdiction over claims above $25,000; in criminal matters they try all felony charges and any misdemeanors originally filed there. They also hear appeals from Virginia's General District Courts, the state's trial courts of limited jurisdiction, for any case involving more than $50, which are retried from the start in the Circuit Courts. Virginia has 120 circuit courts divided among 31 judicial circuits, whose judges are appointed by the legislature to eight-year terms and may be reappointed.
