The Tribunal de Paris, also called the Paris judicial court, is the largest court in France by caseload. It took over the work of the capital's former Tribunal de grande instance and Tribunal d'instance when their jurisdictions were amalgamated on 1 January 2020. For most matters its jurisdiction covers the capital, but it has nationwide jurisdiction over crimes against humanity and war crimes, crimes by or against members of the French armed forces committed outside France in peacetime, corruption and tax evasion, and terrorism. It also holds inter-regional jurisdiction over complex economic and financial affairs and over health affairs. Appeals go to the Court of Appeal of Paris. The court sits in a 38-storey, 160 metre tower designed by Renzo Piano at the Judicial Campus of Paris in the Batignolles district, which opened in 2018 and was inaugurated in April 2019.
