The Superior Court is the state court of New Jersey with statewide trial and appellate jurisdiction. The New Jersey Constitution of 1947 vests judicial power in a Supreme Court, a Superior Court and other courts of limited jurisdiction. The Superior Court has three divisions: the Law Division, the main trial court for civil and criminal cases; the Chancery Division, which hears equity cases; and the Appellate Division, the intermediate appellate court. It sits in 15 districts called vicinages, and its judges are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the State Senate for initial seven-year terms.
