The Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, usually called the Los Angeles County Superior Court, is the California Superior Court with jurisdiction over Los Angeles County and the largest single unified trial court in the United States. It operates 36 courthouses across the county, with several hundred judicial officers and thousands of employees running close to 600 courtrooms. The county superior courts were created under California's 1879 constitution, which turned the old District Courts into appeals courts below the State Supreme Court; the Los Angeles court began with two judges. Its jurisdiction grew to cover all civil, felony criminal, family law, juvenile delinquency and dependency, and probate cases in the county. Its Municipal Courts were administratively unified with it in 1993, and on 22 January 2000, following Proposition 220, the judges of the Municipal and Superior Courts voted to merge into a single court. Its notable cases include the Charles Manson murders and the O. J. Simpson murder case.
