The senior criminal court for London, created in 1834 with jurisdiction to try crimes committed in London, Middlesex, parts of Essex, Kent and Surrey, and crimes committed on the high seas, and commonly known as the Old Bailey after the street on which it stands. Hawley Harvey Crippen was tried and convicted of the murder of his wife there in 1910, before the Lord Chief Justice, and was hanged the same year. Since 1972 the building has been used by the Crown Court sitting in the City of London, but the court that tried Crippen predates that reorganization by decades.
