Illinois circuit courts

The Illinois circuit courts are the state courts of the judiciary of Illinois and function as trial courts of original and general jurisdiction, forming the foundational trial level of the state judicial system. Their jurisdiction covers nearly all justiciable matters, civil and criminal, with only rare exceptions such as legislative redistricting cases, and they also review certain administrative decisions and share jurisdiction with the Illinois Supreme Court over cases involving revenue, mandamus, prohibition and habeas corpus. The system comprises 25 circuits statewide; Cook County maintains its own separate circuit court structure, while the other 24 circuits each serve one or more counties.
