A court of equity, also called an equity court or chancery court, is a court authorized to apply the principles of equity rather than the principles of strict law to the cases before it. These courts developed from petitions submitted to England's Lord Chancellor and dealt with claims seeking remedies beyond monetary damages, such as specific performance and prerogative writs. Most equity courts have since merged with common law courts under statutes granting a single court combined jurisdiction over both legal and equitable matters, with the equity tradition surviving as a discretionary body of principle rooted in fairness and conscience rather than rigid statutory rules.
