Traffic court

Traffic court is a specialized judicial process for handling traffic ticket cases, in which a person cited for a traffic violation may either plead guilty and pay a fine directly or contest the charge before a judge. More serious traffic-related matters, such as driving under the influence or incidents that injure others, are typically handled by larger criminal courts depending on the jurisdiction rather than by traffic court itself. In nine American states, California, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Louisiana, Nebraska, Ohio, Oregon and Wyoming, defendants may also request a trial by written declaration, letting them present their case without a personal court appearance.
