Health court

Health courts are proposed specialized courts for handling medical malpractice claims, employing specially trained judges, independent expert witnesses and standardized compensation amounts, with the aim of reducing administrative expense, expanding patient access to compensation, and discouraging medical procedures performed defensively. Administrative compensation systems already operate in New Zealand and Scandinavian countries, and limited pilot initiatives have run in Florida and Virginia in the United States; in February 2011 the Obama administration proposed allocating 250 million dollars in its 2012 budget for medical malpractice reforms emphasizing health courts, though critics contend the concept could systematically favor physicians and require bureaucratic oversight that would eliminate its promised savings.
