Virginia Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court

Virginia's Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts are specialized courts that handle juvenile crime, child abuse and neglect cases, custody and visitation disputes, and other family matters, including cases where a child or family member is an alleged victim. A single judge presides over each case, and the court can try misdemeanors and hold preliminary hearings in adult felony cases, with appeals proceeding to the Virginia Circuit Court. Beyond ordinary family law matters, the court can authorize a minor to obtain an abortion under specific circumstances and has the authority to grant a minor's emancipation.
