Mental health court

A mental health court is a specialized problem-solving court that links offenders who would ordinarily be bound for prison to long-term, community-based treatment instead, using mental health assessments, individually customized treatment plans, and continued judicial oversight. Like drug courts and domestic violence courts, mental health courts pursue the dual goal of addressing a defendant mental health needs while protecting community safety, aiming to address the underlying causes of criminal conduct rather than applying a purely punitive response to offenses connected to untreated mental illness.
