The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh is the single high court that serves the two Indian union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and of Ladakh. It began as the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir, set up on 26 March 1928 by Order No. 1 of Maharaja Hari Singh, who named Lala Kanwar Sain as its first chief justice and sat the court at both the winter capital Jammu and the summer capital Srinagar. Letters patent were conferred on it in 1943. When the state was reorganised into two union territories on 31 October 2019, the court carried on as the common high court for both. Its seat shifts seasonally between Srinagar and Jammu, and the union cabinet has approved a bench in Ladakh. Its decisions can be appealed to the Supreme Court of India.
