Factory Act 1833

Labor, Employment and Industrial Relations Acts

The Factory Act 1833 (3 & 4 Will. 4. c. 103) is one of the Factory Acts, a series of acts of the Parliament of the United Kingdom beginning in 1802 to regulate and improve conditions of industrial employment, and it received royal assent on 29 August 1833. It barred children under the age of nine from factory employment, except in silk mills, and limited children between nine and thirteen to no more than eight hours of work a day with an hour for lunch; it also created a Factory Inspectorate, subordinate to the Home Office, to carry out routine inspections. The act was repealed and superseded by the Factory and Workshop Act 1878, which took effect on 1 January 1879.
