Directive Principles in India

The Directive Principles of State Policy are guidelines written into the Constitution of India that direct the government in governing the country. They are not enforceable by any court, but they are considered fundamental in the country's governance, obligating the state to apply them when making laws. The Directive Principles aim to create social and economic conditions under which citizens can lead a good life, establishing a framework for a welfare state. They span six broad categories: economic and socialistic matters, political and administrative concerns, justice and legal issues, environmental protection, monument preservation, and peace and security. Although not legally enforceable, all three branches of Indian government, the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary, are expected to be guided by them when conducting official business.
