Loi Informatique et Libertés

Data Privacy and Protection Law

The Loi Informatique et Libertes, formally Law No. 78-17 of January 6, 1978 relating to information technology, data files and civil liberties, is the French law regulating the processing of personal data at the intersection of privacy and computing. Its most recent significant amendments, made in 2023, set a digital age of majority of fifteen years, below which a minor cannot register on a social networking application without parental consent, and require social networks to offer users a means of managing time spent on their platform and to respond to requests marked urgent within eight hours.
