Crown Prosecution Service

The principal public agency for conducting criminal prosecutions in England and Wales, headed by the Director of Public Prosecutions. It was created by the Prosecution of Offences Act 1985 and became operational on 1 October 1986, providing legal advice to police during investigations, deciding whether a suspect should be charged, and conducting prosecutions in the magistrates courts and the Crown Court. The CPS prosecuted Colin Pitchfork, who pleaded guilty at Leicester Crown Court in January 1988.
