United States Marshals Service

The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is a federal law enforcement agency under the United States Department of Justice, operating under the direction of the United States attorney general. It is tasked with enforcing the decisions of and providing protection for the United States federal judiciary. United States Marshals are the original federal law enforcement officers, created by the Judiciary Act of 1789 during the presidency of George Washington as the Office of the United States Marshal under the United States district court; the USMS itself was established in 1969 to provide guidance and assistance to marshals across the federal judicial districts. The Marshals Service is primarily responsible for locating and arresting federal suspects, administering fugitive operations, managing seized criminal assets, operating the Federal Witness Protection Program and the Justice Prisoner Air Transportation System, and protecting federal courthouses, judicial personnel, and senior government officials.
