The elected district attorney for New York County (Manhattan), formed in 1801 with Richard Riker as its first holder, and the office responsible for prosecuting violations of New York state law in the county. Under District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, the office originally prosecuted the five defendants in the 1989 Central Park jogger case and, in December 2002, moved to vacate their convictions after Matias Reyes confessed to the crime.
