Josef Laurenz Kunz was an Austrian American jurist who lived from 1 April 1890 to 5 August 1970 and taught international law at the University of Toledo from 1934 to 1960 after emigrating from Austria in 1932. He earned his doctorate in political science from the University of Vienna in 1920 as a student of Hans Kelsen, and he spent much of his career advancing Kelsen's pure theory of law and promoting cosmopolitanism and the work of the League of Nations, disseminating Kelsen's ideas across North and South America through lectures and Spanish-language publications. He delivered the Hague Academy of International Law lectures three times, in 1930, 1932 and 1955, and was elected an associate of the Institut de Droit International in 1957 and a full member in 1969.
