Philip Caryl Jessup was an American diplomat, scholar and jurist who lived from 5 February 1897 to 31 January 1986 and became a leading figure in twentieth century international law. Educated at Hamilton College, Yale Law School and Columbia University, he served as Hamilton Fish Professor of International Law and Diplomacy at Columbia Law School from 1946 to 1961, acted as a technical adviser at the 1945 United Nations Charter Conference, held the post of United States Ambassador at Large from 1949 to 1953, and sat as a judge of the International Court of Justice from 1960 to 1969. His career spanned the interwar period, the Second World War and the Cold War, and he shaped the field through both academic scholarship and diplomatic and judicial practice at the highest level.
