Raphael Lemkin was a Polish Jewish legal scholar who lived from 1900 to 1959, born in what is now Belarus and educated at the University of Lwow. He coined the term genocide and introduced the concept to legal discourse in his 1944 book Axis Rule in Occupied Europe. After fleeing Nazi occupied Poland in 1939 he settled in the United States, taught on the Duke University law faculty from 1941, lectured in criminal law at Yale from 1948 and became a professor at Rutgers School of Law in 1955. He advised United States Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson at the Nuremberg trials and was the primary architect of the 1948 United Nations Genocide Convention. He died in New York City.
