Boutros Boutros-Ghali lived from 1922 to 2016 and was an Egyptian jurist, academic and diplomat born to a Coptic Christian family in Cairo. He earned a doctorate in international law from the University of Paris in 1949 and taught international law and international relations at Cairo University for thirty years, from 1949 to 1979. He served as acting Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1977 to 1979, helping to negotiate the Camp David Accords and the Egypt Israel peace treaty, and became the sixth Secretary General of the United Nations from 1992 to 1996, later serving as Secretary General of La Francophonie from 1997 to 2002.
