Sir Robert Phillimore

Natural Law and International Law Founders

Sir Robert Phillimore (1810 to 1885) was an English judge and legal scholar who rose from judge of the Cinque Ports in 1855 to judge of the High Court of Admiralty from 1867 to 1875, the last person to hold that nearly four century old office before its jurisdiction passed elsewhere, and who also sat on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council from 1867. He built parallel expertise in ecclesiastical law, serving in commissary and official capacities in several cathedral and diocesan courts, and in international law, publishing treatise commentaries that made him one of the leading English authorities of his generation. He also took part in significant Privy Council cases, including the Guibord case concerning church-state relations in Canada.
