Hersch Lauterpacht

Hersch Lauterpacht lived from 1897 to 1960, a Polish-born jurist who studied under Hans Kelsen in Vienna before settling in Britain, where he became Whewell Professor of International Law at Cambridge and, from 1955 until his death, a judge of the International Court of Justice. Regarded as one of the twentieth century's most influential international lawyers, he argued that individuals, not only states, are proper subjects of international law and that a genuine international legal order requires enforceable human rights, ideas that shaped the post-war development of international human rights law.
