Hans Wehberg

Hans Wehberg (1885 to 1962) was a German international law scholar and pacifist, born in Dusseldorf, who spent much of his career in Geneva. With Walther Schucking, he co-authored an early and influential commentary on the Covenant of the League of Nations in 1921, and argued throughout his career that war as a means of settling disputes must be legally prohibited alongside genuine disarmament. From 1924 until his death he edited the journal Die Friedens-Warte, building it into a specialized publication on international law and the peaceful settlement of disputes, and he later served as Secretary-General of the Institute of International Law from 1950 to 1962.
