Thomas Baty lived from 1869 to 1954 and was an English international lawyer, writer and activist who served as legal adviser to the Japanese Foreign Office from 1916 to 1952, writing on international law throughout that career. Under the pen name Irene Clyde, Baty also co-founded and edited the journal Urania from 1916 to 1940, which opposed binary classifications of gender, and modern scholars have since described Baty using terms including non-binary, genderfluid, transgender and trans woman.
