Paul Auguste Joseph Fauchille was a French legal scholar who lived from 11 February 1858 to 9 February 1926 and is regarded as a pioneer of the law of the air. Born in Loos and educated in law at Douai and the University of Paris, he practiced as an advocate before the Court of Appeals while also teaching law, and he was elected a member of the Institut de Droit International. In 1894 he co-founded and became editor of the Revue Generale de Droit International Public, a leading journal in the field, and in 1921 he co-founded the Institute of Higher International Studies. His principal scholarly achievement was the four-volume Traite de Droit International Public, published between 1921 and 1926 and running to roughly 4,600 pages, a work he produced in close collaboration with his mentor, the jurist Louis Renault.
