Johann Gottlieb Heineccius was a German legal scholar, born 11 September 1681 in Eisenberg, Thuringia, and died 31 August 1741 in Halle. He studied theology at Leipzig and law at Halle, becoming a professor of philosophy there in 1713 and of jurisprudence in 1718, and later held professorships at Franeker and Frankfurt before returning to Halle in 1733. He belonged to the philosophical school of law, treating law as a rational science and working to develop legal principles from fundamental philosophical concepts rather than from practical expediency.
