Lassa Francis Lawrence Oppenheim lived from March 30, 1858 to October 7, 1919 and was a German jurist who has been characterized as the father of the modern discipline of international law, especially of the hard legal positivist school of thought. His two volume work International Law: A Treatise influenced the field, and he inspired later scholars including Joseph Raz and Prosper Weil.
