Jacques Maritain was a French Catholic philosopher and theologian, the author of more than sixty books, who helped revive the natural law thought of Thomas Aquinas for the modern era and was influential in the development and drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Pope Paul VI presented his own closing message to men of thought and of science, at the end of the Second Vatican Council, to Maritain as a longtime friend and mentor, and the same pope seriously considered making him a lay cardinal, an honor Maritain declined. His interests and works spanned aesthetics, political theory, the philosophy of science, metaphysics, the nature of education, liturgy and ecclesiology.
