Appeals Selection Committee of the Supreme Court of Norway

The Appeals Selection Committee, known in Norwegian as Hoyesteretts ankeutvalg, was originally a court of Norway in its own right, though it no longer functions as a separate court instance; today a case is decided by either the committee or the Supreme Court, never both. It comprises three Supreme Court justices appointed intermittently by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Norway, and serves a gatekeeping role, granting leave for criminal appeals from lower courts and for civil cases involving amounts under 100,000 Norwegian kroner, and is authorized to reject appeals where the possibility of a successful appeal is obviously non-existent; it also functions as the final authority on the appeals it does decide, with its rulings published in Norsk Retstidende, the Norwegian Law Reports.
