The Supreme Court of Maryland, known until a name change as the Maryland Court of Appeals, is the highest court of the U.S. state of Maryland. It is composed of one chief justice and six associate justices and sits in the Robert C. Murphy Courts of Appeal Building in the state capital, Annapolis. Its term begins on the second Monday of September each year. The court is unusual among American courts in that its justices wear red robes. As the court of last resort in the state system, it hears appeals from the lower courts of Maryland, and its decisions settle questions of Maryland law for those courts.
