The Maine Supreme Judicial Court is the highest court of the State of Maine and its court of last resort. It has seven justices, presided over by a Chief Justice who is also the head of the Judicial Branch. The court has two major roles. It decides appeals on questions of law arising in the state Superior, District and Probate Courts and in some administrative agencies, and when it does so it is said to sit as the Law Court, its published opinions binding on all Maine courts in similar disputes. It also governs the Judicial Branch by making policy and procedural rules for all state courts, admitting lawyers to practice and regulating the conduct of lawyers and judges. Its justices also issue advisory opinions on state law to the Governor or Legislature on solemn occasions when asked.
