Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution

The Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution addresses presidential succession and disability. It provides that the vice president becomes president if the president dies, resigns, or is removed from office by impeachment, and it creates a mechanism for filling a vacant vice presidency by presidential nomination and congressional confirmation. It also allows the president to voluntarily transfer power temporarily to the vice president as acting president, and allows the vice president together with a majority of the Cabinet to declare the president unable to discharge the duties of office. Congress submitted the amendment to the states on July 6, 1965, and it was ratified on February 10, 1967, when the thirty-eighth state approved it.
