Constitution of Haiti

Haiti's current constitution was approved by Parliament in March 2011 and came into effect on 20 June 2012, one of 22 constitutions the country has adopted since its first, promulgated by Jacques I in 1805 following the Haitian Revolution, and drafted with the United States, Polish and French constitutions as models. The 2012 revision re-legalized dual citizenship, banned since 1987, permitting dual nationals to hold public office with the exceptions of president, prime minister, senator and member of the lower house, and it mandates the establishment of a permanent constitutional court and electoral council along with a requirement that women hold 30 percent of government positions.
