Constitution of Brazil

National Constitutions of the Americas

Brazil's current constitution was promulgated on 5 October 1988 by a democratically elected Constituent Assembly, marking the country's formal transition from the military rule that had governed Brazil from 1964 to 1985 back to civilian democracy. It is widely known as the Constituicao Cidada, the Citizen Constitution, for the breadth of individual, social and collective rights it guarantees, and it established Brazil as a federal presidential republic with an extensive, detailed structure covering government, the economy and social policy in far more depth than most national constitutions attempt. It ranks among the longest and most frequently amended constitutions in the world, having been formally amended dozens of times since 1988 while remaining the country's foundational law throughout.
