The Constitution of the Falkland Islands is the codified constitution of the Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory, established by the Falkland Islands Constitution Order 2008, a United Kingdom statutory instrument. Approved by Queen Elizabeth II on November 5, 2008, it came into force on January 1, 2009, replacing the territory's 1985 constitutional framework. The document modernized protections for fundamental rights, embedded principles of self-determination for the islanders, created an elected Legislative Assembly, redefined the role of the Executive Council and curtailed the powers previously held by the governor. It is organized into ten chapters covering rights and freedoms, the governor, the legislature, the executive, public finance, the public service, the judiciary and complaints procedures. The Legislative Assembly consists of eight elected members, drawn from the constituencies of Stanley and Camp, plus a speaker and two ex officio members.
