Constitution of the Confederate States

The Constitution of the Confederate States, sometimes called the Confederate Constitution, was the supreme law of the Confederate States of America. It superseded the Provisional Constitution of the Confederate States, the first constitution of the Confederacy, in 1862 and remained in effect until the end of the American Civil War in 1865. The original Provisional Constitution is held at the American Civil War Museum in Richmond, Virginia, while the final handwritten Constitution is held at the University of Georgia. Most provisions were word-for-word duplicates of the United States Constitution, but it differed in tone and legal content, chiefly over slavery, which it enshrined as an intrinsic basis of the state.
