Suriname's constitution was adopted on 30 September 1987 following a referendum, marking the country's return to democratic government after the military dictatorship led by Desi Bouterse through the 1980s, and it replaced an earlier 1975 constitution, itself modeled on the Netherlands' constitution, that had been suspended after a 1980 coup. It established the legal framework for Suriname's presidential system, setting out the roles of the President, Vice President, National Assembly and judiciary, including a Constitutional Court and High Court of Justice.
