Cuba's current constitution was approved by national referendum on 24 February 2019 and entered into force on 10 April 2019, replacing the socialist constitution of 1976 that had governed Cuba for more than four decades. It preserves the Communist Party of Cuba's constitutional status as the leading force of Cuban society and the state, while introducing significant reforms: limited recognition of private property and market activity, restoration of procedural protections including the presumption of innocence, and expanded equality guarantees for Cuban citizens. The 2019 constitution also created the office of Prime Minister as head of government, separating that role from the presidency for the first time in decades, and it limits the president to two consecutive five-year terms, a departure from the office's previously open-ended tenure.
