Constitution of Hungary

The Constitution of Hungary, formally the Fundamental Law of Hungary, was adopted by the National Assembly on 18 April 2011, promulgated by the president a week later, and entered into force on 1 January 2012. It is Hungary's first constitution adopted within a democratic framework following free elections, succeeding the 1949 Hungarian Constitution that had been adopted at the creation of the Hungarian People's Republic and heavily amended in 1989. The document has been the subject of domestic and international controversy: critics say it was adopted without sufficient input from the opposition and society at large, reflects the ideology of the ruling Fidesz party, and curtails and politicizes previously independent institutions, claims the enacting government has dismissed as reflecting the popular will.
