Constitution of Slovenia

National Constitutions of Europe

The Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia was adopted on 23 December 1991 during Slovenia's transition to independence following the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Preparation began in August 1987 through an informal draft published by the Slovene Writers' Association, and after the DEMOS coalition's April 1990 election victory the work continued in the national Assembly, with substantial progress made at Podvin Castle near Radovljica in August 1990 under lawyer Peter Jambrek. Its ten chapters cover general provisions, human rights, economic relations, state organization, self-government, public finance, constitutionality, the Constitutional Court, amendment procedures and transitional provisions; it has been amended seven times, including four major revisions addressing European Union convergence in 1997, voting systems in 2000, international organization participation in 2003 and public authority clarification in 2006, and most recently in December 2025, when Slovenia constitutionally protected the right to use cash in all transactions, becoming the third European Union country to do so after Hungary and Slovakia.
