The Constitution of Andorra was adopted on 2 February 1993, approved by popular referendum on 14 March 1993, and entered into force on 28 April 1993, replacing centuries of feudal governance with a modern democratic framework while preserving the country's historic co-princely arrangement. It establishes the Principality of Andorra as a diarchy headed jointly by two co-princes, the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell, and declares that sovereignty lies with the Andorran people. The original text was signed by French President Francois Mitterrand and Bishop Joan Marti Alanis, designates Catalan as the official language, and recognizes the country's traditional anthem, flag and coat of arms.
